Summer Studentship
Purpose
These studentships are intended to provide personal support for students so they can gain research skills and experience. Priority will be given to those with little or no research experience.
Scope
* Undergraduate students will complete a studentship of at least 10 weeks’ duration over the summer period at a tertiary institution in New Zealand* Students must liaise with their tertiary institution before applying
Who can apply?
* New Zealand citizens or permanent residents* Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Honours degree at a New Zealand institution and intending to enrol the following year
* Those who have identified a suitable project and a supervisor willing to oversee the project What is funded?
* A tax-free stipend of $8,500
What will not be funded?
* Students who have already completed a Neurological Foundation summer studentship* Students who have started a Masters or Doctorate or completed a thesis or dissertation in a similar field to the studentship
Closing dates
If the closing date falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be extended to the next working day* 1 September
Process
* For grant round 2024B the Foundation will not be using this online portal. Download an application form at www.neurological.org.nz/research/funding-opportunities/* Complete the application form, including signatures from your supervisor and host institution. The Neurological Foundation will only accept applications sent by the host institution’s research office* Supporting documentation:
- · NZ Standard CV for the proposed supervisor, using the template available at www.neurological.org.nz/apply-for-funding/
* Applicants will be advised of the outcome late in September* Successful applicants will be informed of the conditions of the grant and asked for their formal acceptance of the scholarship contract
General Advice
Purpose
The Neurological Foundation’s purpose is to “Be a catalyst to improve the future quality of life for New Zealanders impacted by neurological conditions”.
This includes diseases and disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The Foundation will accept applications for research that contributes to our understanding of, prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, or management of neurological conditions. The research proposal should have a clear outcome, which will add to knowledge about neurological disorders. The Foundation will accept applications designed to enhance knowledge about the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological disorders, but applications that deal only with the management of mental health disorders will not be considered.
Research contracts
Successful applicants will be offered contracts that outline the conditions of the studentship, including the following:* The Neurological Foundation Summer Studentship cannot be held simultaneously with any other summer studentship* The host institution will administer the studentship
* The studentship will have a specific start date and end date* A final report will be required within 1 month of the studentship end date
* The studentship is paid in two instalments, with the final $1,000 instalment approved for payment once the student’s final report with the supervisor’s comments are received* Any presentations or publications resulting from the studentship will acknowledge the Foundation’s support
